Ableton Tutorial – Using Ableton As An Instrument – Setting Up Drum Racks For Live Performance.

Welcome Back. More of the great content you have come to expect.

One of my main aims is to get people using Ableton Live like an INSTRUMENT so you get good at performing your tracks live.

There are ways of working and setting up effects so you can really get involved in the mix of your track. This is also true of how you “perform” your drums. Once you get good at producing your tracks this way, you naturally become talented at DJ’ing using the program. You start to  apply production effects to entire tracks and live remix them etc.

This 3 part video series shows how I approach making beats using Ableton Live.  I’m not going to be showing how to construct a beat though. I’m going to show you what to do with your drum loop after you have created.

Have you ever wondered how the beats in some tracks have  so much variation? It is hard to imagine how they have been programmed. Well this is the answer.

People are performing amazing effects live over a drumloop.

This sounds amazing with just a single bar loop but even more impressive when you do a 16 bar or longer with some variations in it. There aren’t any limits to this really.

Cheers

Not to be a hater but… why are you doing tutorials if you sorta don’t know what you’re talking about?

No, the different grooves don’t change the “emphasis” on notes, they change the positions of the notes in time, changing the “feel” of the rhythm.

    It’s sound man, I don’t take offence.

I was trying to articulate that the swing reproduces a natural effect that can be done by a live drummer. But considering these videos are not scripted in any way and I’m trying to do many things at once when recording a tutorial sometimes you cannot find the words.

Yes, the way that Ableton processes the swing is that it’s adjusting where the drums appear in relation to time.

I was trying to articulate that when a drummer plays live he can play the same beat in many different ways just by changing where he can place the emphasis.

Say he wants to use the snare for his timing, as far as I’m concerned the snare becomes where he places the emphasis. then he can change the timings of the rest of the beat from this point.

I also say in my videos that I do not have all the answers. I am merely giving demonstrations as to how I use Ableton.

I have a very large list of people who do enjoy these tutorials. I’m trying to inspire and give methods of working.

Did you learn nothing? I doubt it. Maybe some thanks would be nice.

Or maybe point me to your tutorials and let me nit pick at them.

Also I see you never left a link to any of your websites. It’s so easy to pass anonymous criticism.

Your tutorials rock. I kinda got confused too during the swing explanation but the rest of the video is so good it doesn’t even matter. I like the more advanced content of your videos compared to many others out there.
