Vespers Ableton Izotope OzoneHey, hows it going?

Most of you will have already seen my blog post about DJ Vespers and his Izotope Ozone mastering tutorial. If you missed it, you can click on the link to be taken straight to it.

That particular blog post was very popular.

It turns out that you can take any professionally mastered track that you like, have Izotope Ozone scan through it and record the EQ settings. Then you can scan your own track and have the software adjust the EQ for you.

This idea really excited me at the time and I posted the videos for you all to watch.

Now, he shows you how to do a lot more than that. He showed us how to set up the compression, limiting, multiband enhancer and the mutiband stereo imaging. Unless you are a mastering technician I’m sure this information was useful to you.

I decided to treat myself to a copy of Ozone at christmas time but I have been so busy with work that I have not had a chance to use it. Until 2 hours ago that is :D

So, for anyone who is interested, here are the results.

I took an already rendered track, which was a remix I did for my mate Kabaa Modern, a french music producer, then I loaded it back into ableton. I used the James Holden track “Lump” as my reference track and followed through the Vespers videos from start to finish.

I followed everything he said but used my own ears to fine tune the settings in the ways that he described. I might add that it is almost midnight so I had to do this with monitor headphones. There may still be some adjustments needing made to the finished track. However the difference is night and day as far as I’m concerned.

Here is the BEFORE track

So there we have it.

I realise that Izotope Ozone is no substitute for a professional mastering engineer and their juicy hardware but it is a step in the right direction. I’m going to have some fun with Ozone and see how far I can hone my skills.

Izotope Ozone, although a great plugin, is quite complicated at first. But already, having only used it for a couple of hours, it is actually pretty easy to use. Especially with some expert tuition.

Thanks again to DJ VESPERS. I really appreciate those videos!
